What A1 means

This is how the Common European Framework (CEFR) describes A1:

  • Understands and uses familiar everyday expressions and simple phrases.
  • Introduces themselves and others; asks and answers simple questions about where they live, people they know and things they have.
  • Can hold a simple conversation if the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is ready to help.
